I have spent the first two months of this year burned out. I was weak, exhausted, stressed. Whatever was bothering me, it was clear that I wasn’t firing on all cylinders.
I was so gassed, it would often take me days to recover from a single WOD. So I backed off. I reexamined what I was eating. I reduced my coffee consumption. I made a deliberate effort to get to bed earlier. I cherry-picked WODs just to keep me motivated to show up.
I re-introduced tracking Heart Rate Variability, Blood Pressure, Resting Heart Rate, Blood Sugar and Weight. I needed something measurable to help track whether I was progressing or regressing. What I discovered was that my Blood Pressure and Pulse were extremely erratic and I felt like I was on a roller coaster. I was feeling anxious and my heart rate was elevated when I was trying to sleep. Something was amiss.
Over the course of six to eight weeks, I limited my coffee to two cups per day, none later than 2:00 p.m.. I increased my carbohydrate intake by reintroducing white rice and sweet potatoes 3 to 4 times a week. I increased my saturated fat intake by eating more butter. I typically turned the lights out between 9:00 and 10:00, to ensure I was getting seven to eight hours of sleep. I spent less time sitting, since introducing a standing desk into my office, so I moved more throughout the day. I sought out quiet time during the day, to meditate on breathing and being calm. I minimized or scaled back on long metcons.
There was a cumulative beneficial effect from these things. When I hit the beginning of March, I noticed things were improving. I had gained weight. After two years I gained 7-10 pounds, but not fat. It is clear that I have bulked up a bit. I began feeling better. I was getting into the gym more frequently and I was feeling stronger, both during and after workouts.
I’m not hitting PRs, but once again, I am feeling invigorated and alive. My stamina is increasing.
Over the past week I have been exposed to a fair amount of weightlifting, mostly in the form of deadlifts, front squats, back squats and presses. I am sore, my body is throbbing. I am thanking God to be alive to savor this pain. It is a sweet delicious pain, it is the fruit of my labor.
