Drugs – the Fine Print gets Finer

Drugs – the Fine Print gets Finer

http://www.flickr.com/photos/emagineart/4741451457/I will admit that I am somewhat cynical of our alleged “Healthcare” industry, which I personally view as a “Disease Management” model. I certainly mean no offense to my friends who are in this profession, but I do believe that as long as the financial interests of pharmaceuticals companies and agribusiness keep stuffing the pockets of government policy makers, we will never get well. That is, of course, unless we are Defiant.

A friend forwarded an excerpt from this Ted Talk presentation, by Ben Goldacre, to me. It was fascinating enough for me to seek it out in it’s entirety. Dr. Goldacre discusses the shell game of deceitful research, reporting and statistical spin employed by drug companies. I believe you will find it insightful, perhaps you will even find it inciteful.

As we find pharmaceuticals companies targeting consumers with a candy dish full of pills for many maladies, real or imagined, it is important to beware that these side effects are only the tip of the iceberg. There is a host a research that is hidden from public view, which calls into question the risks or efficacy of these alleged medications.

I encourage my friends to seek every possible lifestyle adaptation before even considering prescriptions. Since I have been assuming responsibility for my health and wellness, I have reduced my meds by 75%. Listening to Goldacre’s comments in this brief presentation encourages me be more aggressive in getting myself off this stuff.

(Sarcastic Disclaimer: Yes, I admit I am not a doctor. This is my opinion. Do what you want, but take responsibility for your own actions.)
