CrossFit Open 18.5 Post Mortem

CrossFit Open 18.5 Post Mortem

By Chuck · 3 Comments ·

CrossFit Open 18.5 is already upon us. Ironically the Open seems to have flown by and dragged on at the same time. Most people I know are very conflicted about the Open, and for varied reasons.

This is my sixth season and my attitude and maturity have improved significantly. But Friday is typically a rest day for me, so coming into the gym for a fifth consecutive day, for five weeks has been taking a toll on me.

CrossFit Open 18.5 – The Workout

18.5 was 12.5, which was 11.6. I have written about every Open workout I’ve ever done. But I began CrossFit in the Fall of 2012, so I had never done (nor documented) this WOD.

Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes of:
3 thrusters
3 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups
6 thrusters
6 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups
9 thrusters
9 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups
12 thrusters
12 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups
15 thrusters
15 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups
18 thrusters
18 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups

This is a timed workout. If you complete the round of 18, go on to 21. If you complete 21, go on to 24, etc.

Men use 45 lb.

My Strategy

I don’t mind Thrusters. Not to be confused with stating I like Thrusters. Clearly that is two different things. Where I was anxious was the Jumping chin-over bar pull-ups. Why? In Open 18.3 we had Jumping Chest-to-Bar Pull-ups and I got a nice round Zero on those. Why? I cannot jump high enough.

So I figured it was gonna be more of the same in Open 18.5. Perform three Thrusters, then attempt to jump over the bar for the next 6 minutes and 45 seconds.

Results

Much to my surprise, I was able to get my chin over the bar. Though I wasn’t fast, I was deliberate and did not get No Repped. So that was good. In fact I got past the 15’s and into the 18’s for a final score of 92. Like most of the Open workouts this season, I performed this after five consecutive days in the gym. I am confident that if I performed this one fresh, after a couple rest days, I could get another 15-20 points. I may do this as a Driveway WOD this Spring or Summer, but not now. Not during the Open. 2018 is my year for One and Done.

    Hi Chuck
Thanks for your posts. I was wondering if you would be willing to discuss the Longevity Program you are currently running.

Henry, thanks for asking. Our Longevity class is now up to five regular members. I run the class on Tuesday and Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. I use the gym’s regular daily programming, scaling the workouts appropriately. Though the movements are the same (or similar), I pay attention to intensity and high rep schemes. My regular clients consider my classes to be paced more to their liking/needs. Since this program is new at our gym, we’re feeling things out and it will continue to evolve to better serve the needs of the members.
