I have recently found myself engaged in a few discussions on various “Masters CrossFit” Facebook forums.
These discussions vary from performance, to diet, to supplements, etc. Clearly the conversations are from the perspective of doing this intense activity, while combatting the aging process.
One thing that has come up recently has been the issue of feeling discouraged or out of place among the young athletes. Clearly there is a difference between a 30 year old and a 60 year old in regards to strength and endurance. But personally it doesn’t phase me.
The physical gap is real, I accept it and push ahead. The social aspect is simple, I engage and reach out. The “generation gap” (a term from the 60’s) doesn’t exist in my circles.
I haven’t experienced a Box with Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y. I experience a room full of friends who identify themselves as CrossFitters.
I do not expect to keep up with a man half my age. I give thanks every day that I am able to show up and perform. My Box is filled with a bunch of smart-alecks punks of all ages. We all support one another and encourage each other to keep pushing forward. I just happen to be the oldest punk in the room.
Now that the college kids are filtering back into the box for the summer, all of a sudden, the thirty-somethings feel old. Buckle up, it’s a long ride.
